7/10/95 8:16:43 PM Opening "Chat Log 7/10/95" for recording.
SPINaps: WE'RE STILL WAITING FOR THESE GUYS... HOLD YOUR
HORSES. EVERYONE--THE PRODIGY SHOULD BE HERE REALLY SOON.
THEY'RE ROCK STARS NOW, SO YOU KNOW, THEY CAN BE LATE TO
THINGS. SO HOLD ON. WE'LL HAVE EM SOON. SORRY SORRY SORRY.
SPINaps: OK, they're here.
SPINaps: A classically trained pianist, snow board enthusiast, and
former London rap DJ Liam Howlett's unique hardcore dance sound
propelled the Prodigy's new album "Music for a Jilted Generation" to
#1 on the UK Dance charts in its first week. The album has already
surged past the platinum mark.
SPINaps: The Prodigy are touring the U.S. now and playing a show in
NYC tonight. We've got the entire band in the SPIN office--all seven
of them. Liam is "JiltedGen." After the conference don't forget to
stop into SPINonline's Games & Contests area to play the Prodigy
Remix Contest.
SPINaps: So, we've got the band here. Throw your questions in now.
SPINaps: So, Liam what were you guys doing in NYC today?
JiltedGen: Checking out some skateboard shops and snowboard shops.
We just sort of walked around and killed a bit of time and had a look
at the city, really.
SPINaps: Before we start taking questions, where else are you guys
playing in the states.
JiltedGen: Dallas tomorrow (Jul 11), Tampa on Thursday (Jul 13),
Friday in San Francisco (Jul 14), and Saturday we're in LA (Jul 15).
DugFixIt: Do you all want to legalize drugs?
JiltedGen: No
SPINaps: So, maybe we should explain what JiltedGen is....
JiltedGen: The jilted generation are just open minded straight kids
that are into most fun adrenaline type sports and activities. They
look for more in life than just work, and they look at people in life
as (most straight people) look at street kids as being below them
and not as good as them. We say that we don't care, and we're just
into hanging out and enjoying life and finding an adrenaline buzz,
like snowboarding and performing live, crowd surfing, having people
perform on stage, just going mad. We don't rehearse; it's just
spontaneous. What happens, happens. It's down to earth.
SPINaps: We're doing a big remix contest with the Prodigy. Sound
clips are available for download at SPINonline.
SPINaps: What do you guys look for in a remix?
JiltedGen: Just original and different to my version.
Jsglick: What makes techno hardcore SO much fun?
JiltedGen: The energy, and the fact that anyone can create it. It's not
just techno. We like the same hard dance music which incorporates break beats, hip hop.
Jmanovak: Where does rave culture go from here?
JiltedGen: I think they're the sort of people that might look for
anything. During the summer it might turn into outdoor events. Rave
culture is not just based on the music; rave culture are just people
who want to go out and dance and have a good time. It's not just
based on one type of music; they can dance to any type of hard music.
SPINaps: Is there a big difference between US and UK rave/techno?
JiltedGen: I'd say Europe at the moment has got quite a unique scene.
It seems quite the same around Europe. There's a lot of techno and
outside festivals and outside parties that are more sort of rave
based. Europe has sort of caught on to the hard side of dance music.
It is a very mature sort of music. It's very heady, to someone who
might not know it. I think with a techno or a hard dance song, you
have to know that buzz, get on the vibe, horrendous volumes, etc.
Ventolin: Liam--is there any way you guys can come to Chicago?
JiltedGen: Not this time, unfortunately. Definitely next time.
Jsglick: If anyone can make hardcore techno, what qualifies YOU to
make it?
JiltedGen: You don't have to qualify. It's not hardcore techno; it's
hardcore dance music. It incorporates hard music from a different
stance.
GerS 1: How do you feel about the raves being broken up by the TV
news in Detroit?
JiltedGen: I don't know anything about that. Basically there's always someone trying to stop someone from having a good time somewhere.
Trying to get around it is hard, but that's the fun of doing it.
Ventolin: Is 'Electronic Punks' going to have a U.S. release?
JiltedGen: Maybe if Mute will sort it out.
SpinZAPPER: Download sound samples by the Prodigy and remix them.
If the Prodigy picks your song, they'll record it on their next B-side
and you'll win a SPIN jacket. Go to the SPIN Games and Contest area
for more info.
ObiPUSh: Do you ever think that you are in competition with other major label artists? Moby, Sven Vath, etc...
JiltedGen: No, it's a different style. They're more into the techno
thing, plus live shows tend to be different. And I can't see Sven
incorporating hip hop beats and guitars into his music.
NPherno: What was the Criminal Justice Bill all about that was
passed in the UK to stop raves?
JiltedGen: Do I have to swear on it? You're not allowed to .
Ventolin: When are the jungle tracks you recorded going to be
released?
JiltedGen: Maybe on the next 12" release.
JAdrianB: What kind of software do you recommend, if any, for IBM,
for creating the music?
JiltedGen: Steinberg Cubase.
SPINaps: We've got some programs in the SPINonline Multimedia
Laboratory for you to download and use to remix the clips.
Matushka0: Who will you be playing with in Dallas (they've got some
great bands there e.g. Sofa: Kingdom, System Failure)?
JiltedGen: There will be DJ's in Dallas. Other than that, no DJ's and no bands.
Sikofital: Do you know if the group Messiah is still together, and
have you ever worked on any joint projects?
JiltedGen: No, they're not together anymore.
ObiPUSh: Do you have any side projects going? Solo projects?
JiltedGen: Only remix work.
SpinZAPPER: Download sound samples by the Prodigy and remix them.
If the Prodigy picks your song, they will record it on their next B-
side and you'll win a SPIN jacket. Go to the SPIN Games and Contest
area for more info.
SPINaps: Liam wants to know if anyone has checked out the Method
Man remix. Submit your answers to "COMMMENT".
MattCoope: Have you heard anything recently from the fathers of
techno: The KLF?
JiltedGen: I didn't know they were the fathers of techno. I think
they've split up now. They only made one good record, the original,
"What Time Is Love."
SSusan200: Hi Liam. Do you guys play instruments or is it all tapes,
techno, and effects?
JiltedGen: I play percussion on stage, and we have a guitarist on
stage. There aren't any rules saying you have to have a full band to
entertain.
Matushka0: Has Jourgensen ever worked with you (maybe for a
remix)?
JiltedGen: No.
ObiPUSh: What is the future of Prodigy? What direction do you see
yourself going in musically?
JiltedGen: Just following on from "Jilted Generation." Always hard,
always kicking beats. And inspiration from hip hop guitar music.
SSusan200: Hey, thanks for the answer. I wish you guys a lot of luck.
Will you ever be in Raleigh, NC, and do you know when??? Take care
and thanks!!!
JiltedGen: Not just yet.
Ventolin: Can you tell us about Empirion, who opened for you in the
UK?
JiltedGen: Friends of ours, on Wanted Records. Soon to be on XL
Recordings, London.
Sikofital: Front Line Assembly re-mixed a death metal band, Fear
Factory, on their c.d., "Fear is the Mind Killer" (no relation to Eon).
Have you heard this c.d., and if you did, what did you think?
JiltedGen: I have that; it's good. Actually, they asked me to do a
remix of their stuff, but I'm too busy at the moment writing my own
material.
Ventolin: Much respect to Keith, Maxim, and Leeroy.
JiltedGen: Big respect back.
ObiPUSh: Where did you find the art for the new album cover? That
was VERY cool.
JiltedGen: We had the inside cover drawn by an artist, and the
outside sculpture was on my friend's wall.
JAdrianB: Do you think bands like Depeche Mode, Erasure, or OMD
helped create the techno/rave music, based on computers?
JiltedGen: No, I wouldn't say they actually helped them, though they
were using the equipment. Not techno but electronic music.
SPINaps: We've got time for two more questions.
NPherno: Do you guys have an Internet address???
JiltedGen: No, we don't, but we should get one, soon.
SPINaps: Unfortunately, we're out of time. Do you guys have any last
words?
JiltedGen: Hope to see a few people at some shows. Big respect to
everyone that supports us and understands what we're about. We
hope that the guys who come to the shows can get on the buzz on the
band and the girls can come back to the hotel.
SPINaps: Hey, Prodigy, thanks for stopping into the SPIN Lounge tonight. "Music for the Jilted Generation" sounds really good.
SpinZAPPER: Download sound samples by the Prodigy and remix them.
If the Prodigy picks your song, they will record it on their next B-
side and you'll win a SPIN jacket. Go to the SPIN Games and Contest
area for more info.
SPINaps: We've got the Pharcyde this Wednesday.
SPINaps: Thanks guys. And thanks to everyone for stopping in tonight.
Play the remix contest and win stuff. Later.
